Kaolin is a white, soft and plastic mineral that does not occur very frequently in nature. It consists mainly of fine-grained and lamellar particles. Kaolin is formed when the anhydrous aluminium silicates in rocks with a high proportion of feldspar are changed by weathering or hydrothermal processes. This process, which transforms, for example, hard granite into the soft basic substance in the kaolin pits, is called ‘kaolinization’.

Through its white colour and the special plasticity, kaolin is particularly well-suited for use as a filler, extender, ceramic raw material, fireproof raw material and as a pigment. It is a unique and proven industrial mineral, because it also remains chemically inert over a relatively broad pH range. In addition, kaolin is soft, non-abrasive and conducts heat and electricity only to a minor degree.
